THERE is not much babble introduction or any banter needed when describing or introducing this INVENTIVE epic "Grunge" Rock anthem WHETHER to newbies or oldies WHO may have ALREADY heard and or seen it !! ,.. this is a classic that needs No INTRODUCTION IN ROCK EPIC'S !! - JUST LISTEN TO IT FOR YOURSELF !! AGAIN !! It Clearly Stands on IT'S OWN !! BABY !!
THIS IS THE "WHITE BLACK" SONG OR AS CLARK HAGINS has altered it in recent years; "The Black And White Song" !!
Originally called "White Black Thang" in it's earliest days of 1991 AND on into the new millennium , this "THANG" IS A REAL ROCK N ROLL INDIE "Alternative" WINNER !! !! And,... Indeed !!
AND IT'S MOSTLY BECAUSE OF "WHEN" it was recorded And HOW ,.. it May JUST "Be" The revolutionary track that JUST DID IN FACT "INVENT" GRUNGE ROCK ,..AND FOR ALL OF US !!
SOUNDING A BIT MAYBE TOO MUCH LIKE A Guns N' Roses Classic or maybe something by Ian Astbury and THE CULT , THIS SONG seems to take off in a big Arena Rock anthem direction LIKE NO SONG EVER BEFORE IT ! YES ,.. and it makes no bones about it and from the START TOO !! AND BACK IN IT'S DAY ,.. of being conceived, written, and recorded ,..there were no songs in existence ,..Quite like this one !! HERE ! ",... but ,, Suddenly, I noticed that there were a lotta' Records after it ,.. that seemed to "Be influenced" by it I noticed." ( Laughs ) Says Haggins.
Hagins says that this song seemed to emerge "Out of Nowhere" ONE DAY ,.. in the summer of 1990 at his House at 251 Paseo De Gracia in Redondo Beach Calif. while the band were recording the "Immorally Moral" 3 Song Cassette E.p and Hagins was heavily self motivated to play an "Early demo" of the idea to band mates Guitarist Phil Keegan and Bassist Rick Carmody ; "They both hated it ,.. and they said it was lame and retarded" ( Laughs ) Says Hagins for ROCK CITY BLOGS 2019. But,.. "I LITERALLY HEARD THIS whole Song in a dream ,,, and I heard it literally from start to finish !! too !! There was simply just something too special about it ,.. An Angel basically was whispering to me that "This is the coming SOUND TOMORROW in Rock n roll Music !!" Undaunted by any opinions , Hagins recorded this track and playing all the instruments himself on March 11, 1991 At Redondo Beach's Pendragon Recording Studio with engineers "Wild" Bill Krodel and Marky Mark Nathanson; "I knew I had a hit that was what I was thinking but I also "just knew" that I had landed on this whole new Songwriting "Style" too !! " THE TRACK PACKED BIG HUGE GUITARS AND VERY POUNDING DRUMS AND EVERYTHING THAT DAY AT THE RECORDING JUST WENT OVER THE TOP, ..SAYS HAGINS; "White Black Thang ,.. it had to have it all ,... a weird "New" sound,..controversial lyrics,.. and one incendiary delivery !! And all at the "Dawn" of a New Decade !! I wanted it to be cheesy but I wanted it to be really really good too ,..Yes,.. i definitely wanted this thing to be Pop ,..to be some kind of commercial ROCK anthem !! BUT I ALSO WANTED things to be plenty weird and underground-ish too ,.. it had to have G.e. stamped all over it !! AND IT FUCKING DID !! TOO !! UPON COMPLETING THE TRACK, HAGINS kept it "secret" as best he could from the South Bay ,..worrying that both the style and the song lyrical ideas "could be Stolen" !! and quickly hired an Attorney to Copyrite it ,. "Everyone knew that I was this cutting edge dude who always invented THE NEW SHIT ,.. Flipside Magazine and other Zines; they raved about me,.. they raved about US; G.E!! WE WERE LOS ANGELES' new big thing,.. We weren't just some typical Metal or Punk run-of-the-mill shit; WE WERE WAY DIFFERENT AND UNIQUE ,..BUT THIS SONG,..WAS EVEN WEIRD !! FOR US !!

"White Black Thang" is one of those VERY RARE songs that can get 50 different reactions when it is heard by 50 different people ,... "the reviews can be all over the place" says Haggins. "Some people love it and swear by it while others simply don't ,.. but they look very worried ALL ,.. which I consider Victory enough !!" ( Laughs ). The Song has found success all over the world and at many websites and Jango and Pandora Radios in Recent Years. "Internet Radio seems to love this song" Says Hagins.
Back in 1991, the Song received almost immediate acclaim from many people, magazines, record labels , etc,.. and Hagins found himself fielding "offers" as well as trying to both describe the Sound of the Song as well as the over all "Sound" OF G.E. !! "WELL ,..CLEARLY the song was some new kind of "Alternative rock" and we had always called ourselves "Grunge" and we would always say : "We're not heavy metal ,..We are like Neil Young, THE STOOGES, or the Who or something like that,..but mixed with Black Flag !!" ( laughs ) Says Hagins ,.. " I clearly plainly had dilemma's with this song,..never mind and FORGET the fact, the lyrics were so damn fucking controversial indeed !!" ( LOL ) ,... The Song grooves along almost like you may be listening to an Axl Rose Guns n Roses B-Side forgotten Classic until you realize ,..this is no G n R Song ,.. midway through ,.. the tangy guitars almost sound like the Byrds and 1960's but they clash and very Weirdly with the "Big Sound" here that is over all and in general with this track indeed !! "Some people have told me over the years,..that this song sounds a bit way too much like maybe that Group Spacehog ,...but this is way before that !! " Barks Hagins ,.. Several Big Time A & R people readily approached Hagins not only about the song and G.e. but also inquiring if Hagins "Wanted to write songs for others" to which Hagins declined; "I was always told that G.e. didn't look right,..that we were ugly boys who didn't dress well ,.. that we weren't professionals, etc etc ,... but all that is what makes us so Great !! The very existence of G.e. Seemed to be one big weird contradiction indeed ,.. "I was told over and over to get rid of Ted , AND PALLE TOO .,.. to "Lose those guys " IF YOU WILL ,.. " ( LOL ) ,.. AT LEAST 2 of these many A n R guys seemed a little too interested in the track and in G.e. ,.. and these 2 were Gary Gersh And Craig Aaronson of Geffen Records" Says Hagins. "The dude Aaronson was particularly enthralled with the Song AND OUR BAND ! " Hagins says that many people over the years HAD ALWAYS doubted G.e but when alotta people heard this track, minds began to change ,.. "We never gotta record deal ,.. but I know so many people loved this song back in 1991 , We always threw the Biggest Local Concerts, G.e. were too creative for their own good , NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT ,.. too much vision ,.. and I would say this song was the Blue Print Prototype for an entire "Decade" of ALTERNATIVE Rock music ,..in the 1990's Decade" Says Hagins. TODAY , Hagins makes sure to always dedicate the track to his Brother Paul who loved the Song and who passed away in November 2011 ,...
