That first Joe Dirt Movie from 2001 was awesome ,...many people saw that thing in a theater somewhere by pure mistake ,...as they were too late for the movie they had intended to see by 25 minutes and so ended up watching Dirt by default ,..only to be stunned at what they beheld ,..a very true and accurate look into the life of your typical American five foot six ( or less ) male guy ,... as the often scant audience roared ( some theaters back then 'were' packed though ) ,...
As critics immediately lampooned the flick and getting some initial agreement ,..it's audience only grew over time ,..of course most critics being 6 foot 2 or three and up to their ears in ladies, money, and fun ,..not knowing the pratfalls of the American Dirt,..
Now Joe Dirt of course is what we all know damn well exists out there,... and not just out in the sticks of Georgia or Idaho or Tennessee ,..
There are little Dirts in California and New York, etc,.. of course sporting long sweaty weird hair in hopes that this lesser lame new music of today will go away ,.. and that Van Halen and Skynard ,...will come back !! and Forever permanently ! ,..as they are hated by all, rejected by chicks, and struggling for the slightest dime or food ,..as they stumble and fumble ,.. with just about EVERYTHANG ,..
Joe Dirt 2 is the long awaited sequel ...and I am of course a huge Dirt fan who has been awaiting along with the throngs ,...but Stunningly ,...much of Dirt 2 falls flat as it struggles with forced humor , long painful parts ,..that you wanna ( and do ) fast forward through ala Adam Sandler's Click ,.. and this movie is often way too 'serious' for it's own good ,... this is certainly not the easy going blow out humor of Dirt 1 ,... though in FF-ing, you may miss key stuff as I discovered in re-watching that this plot is thick and the movie actually can seem well put together for how cumbersome it is ,.. David Spade apparently writing it ,... Could have used a ton of major help here ! We see that the budget was tight ,.. among other issues ,..
Dirt 2 is a very complex story where a tornado comes and interrupts Dirt's not-so-paranoia that he 'will lose it all' at which point Dirt apparently dies or goes into some mad dream or something like that ,...where he once again meets old characters Clem, Kickin'-Wing, etc,.. and a young Lynard Skynard too !!
Despite being a typical American Loser, Dirt has managed to build a family with Brandy who produces triplets as they live of course out in the boonies in a trailer,.. a helpful watchful God doing his best to sustain JD ,..but like everyone else,.. having some fun with him too ,..
Typical anti-Dirt villans ( remember Robbie ?? ) are in this movie aplenty, farting on and harassing Dirt as he floats through his latest adventure : ,..to get back to Brandy ,..and from back in 1965 and through the 70's ,..getting rich ( very un-Dirt-like ) with mafia man Clem along the way ,.. all told in a funny Forrest Gump meets other flicks way ,..
In short I will say that this movie had potential to be awesome if it had funnier stuff and if it was compacted way down ,..before I read Ebert's review last night ,.I had already mumbled to myself that many scenes dragged on way too long and could have and should have been condensed ,..and compartmentalized and that much inventory should have been done here before hand ,... I myself could have made this movie way funnier as i see missed opportunities left and right and UP AND DOWN AND everywhere,..
Dirt 2 ends up much more like the mess that was Dicky Roberts Former Child star than the classic-ness of Dirt 1,..
In the end, I will say that Dirt 2 painfully misses the mark of the Bullseye and doesn't really come close but it could - with future TV - become a mildly pleasing thing as it is slowly watched and scrutinized carefully with time ( and with many people very stoned ) ,..and may get some respect with time too ,..unlike Dirt himself ,..but just like Star Trek ,..this ,..and future versions 3 and 4 that may come tomorrow ,.. can and will NEVER never touch that original ,..
it reminded me just a bit of Bill and Ted's Part 2 ,...very overdone ,... yet missing A LOT ,.. somehow ,.. I'm not sure if it's the writing, the editing, the grayish grainy dreary filming ,..or what it is,.. but this Dirt,.. COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER !!
